Vodafone and AST Spacemobile Agreement: A Big Break for European Mobile Consumers?

Vodafone and AST Spacemobile Agreement

The European Leaders

03 March 2025

Midland – Ever been stuck in a mobile dead zone, desperately waving your phone in the air hoping for a signal?  For too many across Europe, especially in rural spots, patchy mobile coverage is a frustrating daily reality. But hold onto your signal bars folks, because that might just be about to change. The Vodafone and AST Spacemobile Agreement is making waves, promising to beam mobile broadband from space straight to your smartphone.

Does it sound like science fiction? Well, it’s fast becoming a business fact, and it could be a game-changer for how we connect.

Vodafone, the telecoms giant we all know, has teamed up with AST SpaceMobile, a company with rather ambitious plans: to put mobile phone towers – in the sky. Think of it as taking the traditional mobile network and extending it way beyond those familiar masts, using satellites orbiting the Earth. This isn’t your old clunky satellite phone, mind you.

This is about using clever satellites that talk directly to the smartphone you already have in your pocket, with no special gadgets needed and, importantly, without needing any new apps either. They’ve even set up a joint venture, rather neatly named SatCo, dedicated to making this space-based broadband a reality across Europe.

What’s the Big Deal? 100% Coverage Across Europe?

Imagine 100% mobile coverage across Europe. Yes, you read that right. From the remote Scottish Highlands to the deepest forests of Romania, the promise is seamless connectivity.

AST SpaceMobile’s satellites are designed to act like those ground-based mobile masts, just a whole lot higher up. They’re aiming for speeds of up to 120 Mbps – enough for video calls, streaming, and all the usual smartphone shenanigans. And Vodafone isn’t just dipping a toe in; they’ve signed a long-term deal running all the way to 2034, showing they are serious about this space-based future.

Proof is in the Pudding: Space-Based Video Call a Reality

This isn’t just a pipe dream, either. Vodafone proudly announced they’ve already made the world’s first space-based mobile video call using these BlueBirds satellites back in January 2025.

Proof of concept? Absolutely. They are now pushing ahead, setting up a research hub in sunny Malaga, Spain, and even building a manufacturing facility in Barcelona to ramp things up. The plan is to start rolling out this service across Europe in the next couple of years, 2025 and 2026 being the key dates to watch.

Vodafone’s Strategic Masterstroke: Building the Highway in the Sky

For Vodafone, this is a strategic masterstroke. They’ve been investors in AST SpaceMobile for years and are doubling down now. It’s about future-proofing their network and reaching places traditional mobile networks simply can’t, or can’t afford to. Think rural communities, maritime industries, even disaster relief scenarios where ground infrastructure is knocked out.

But it’s not just Vodafone who benefits. This agreement is designed to be shared. Vodafone wants to offer this space-based connectivity as a ’turnkey service’ to other mobile operators across Europe. Essentially, they are building the highway in the sky, and other companies can drive their traffic on it.

Benefits for European Mobile Users and Operators

What does the Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile agreement mean for the average European mobile user? Potentially, a lot.

  • For Vodafone Customers: Enhanced coverage, especially in previously underserved areas.
  • For Other Mobile Operators: Opportunity to expand coverage without massive infrastructure costs.
  • Overall Market Impact: Potential for more competitive pricing and faster rollout of new services.
  • Digital Sovereignty: Supports European digital sovereignty by keeping infrastructure and data handling within European borders.

Roaming Prices: Indirect but Positive Potential

Now, before you start dreaming of drastically cheaper roaming charges thanks to satellites, let’s manage expectations. This agreement isn’t directly about slashing roaming prices, but it does contribute to a more efficient and competitive mobile landscape.

  • Enhanced Network Efficiency: Leads to cost savings and scalability that could influence pricing.
  • EU Roaming Regulations: Supports the broader goal of seamless and affordable connectivity within the EU’s “Roam Like at Home” framework.
  • Market Competition: Fosters a more competitive environment that could lead to better pricing strategies, including roaming.

Voices from the Top

As Margherita Della Valle, CEO of Vodafone, puts it: “Vodafone’s space-based mobile broadband will mean our customers can stay connected, wherever they are. Our new satellite company will be able to offer this pioneering technology to other European mobile operators through a turnkey service that combines Vodafone’s leading network and engineering with AST SpaceMobile’s ‘antennas in the sky’.”

Abel Avellan, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile, echoes this ambition: “Together with Vodafone, we are poised to accelerate our commercialization plans across all of Europe, making true mobile broadband from space a reality.”

The Bottom Line: A Giant Leap for Connectivity?

The Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile agreement isn’t just another business deal; it’s a bold step towards fundamentally changing how we access mobile connectivity in Europe.  It’s about bridging the digital divide, offering true universal coverage, and perhaps, finally consigning those dreaded mobile dead zones to history.

For European mobile consumers, this agreement isn’t just a step forward, it could well be a giant leap.
